Reflections on 15th Baptist World Youth Conference in Leipzig, Germany

September 12th, 2008

Alison’s Reflection

Baptist Youth from over 85 countries joined in an amazing period of spiritual exploration from July 30 to August 3, 2008. They dived deeper into their belief in Jesus Christ, as well as the various cultures of their fellow Christians. According to the Baptist World Alliance (BWA) Youth executive, the conference theme  DIVE DEEPER- Is a call to move from the surface and establish a more genuine relationship with Christ. It is a call to experience spiritual renewal and have a new outlook of the world and society.

Numerous activities were coordinated in view of achieving this spiritual goal. These included culturally diverse concerts, family group sessions, Bible studies, worship celebrations and workshops about issues facing young Christians today. This feast of opportunities was almost overwhelming. I often found myself wanting to be in two places at the same time. Since this was obviously impossible, it was a comfort to attend the main morning and evening sessions, which included a bit of everything. These sessions focused on Bible study and worship, while exploring the Dive Deeper sub-themes:

Deeper Faith In Jesus

Deeper Justice From Jesus

Deeper Listening To Jesus

Deeper Outreach For Jesus

Deeper Experience Of Jesus

I found the Bible study on Deeper Outreach For Jesus especially relevant. It was based on the conversation between Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well (John 4:1-30; 39-42). Here, Jesus gives an ideal example of how to witness to others. Although Jews and Samaritans differed in aspects of their religious beliefs, Jesus defied religious rules by conversing with this Samaritan woman. He demonstrated that God is more interested in a relationship with us than with religious rules.

Jesus witnessed effectively, not only with His actions, but with the things He discussed and how He said them. The illustrations Jesus used (thirst and water) were familiar to this woman. This established in her a level of comfort and openness to what Jesus was saying. Jesus added a personal dimension to the conversation by asking the woman about her life, and in particular her many husbands. His frankness forced her to be honest. His response to her background was not the judgmental stance she received from others. This unexpected response went even further in helping the woman come to terms with her spirituality. Jesus convinced her to accept this message from Him—the Living Water that would quench her thirst.

The Samaritan woman was inspired and immediately witnessed to the town people about her experience. They listened and were amazed at the change in her. Many of them also came to believe in Jesus. From this we can learn that when witnessing to others it is important to show that we are not perfect, but simply forgiven. We need to humbly share our experiences with Jesus while introducing others to Him— to experience Him for themselves.

This youth conference was a truly exceptional experience. It inspired me to dive deeper into my faith. This resulted in a greater commitment to witness to others, thereby facilitating deeper outreach for Christ. I hope that I have encouraged others to take the plunge and DIVE DEEPER!

National Youth Conference & Rally

April 6th, 2008

It’s that time again. Time to start preparing for National Youth Conference and Rally!

WHEN IS IT?

Conference and Rally 2008 will be held between November 20 and 22 (Thursday through Saturday).

WHERE IS IT?

The weekend begins at the Nutshell Conference Centre (Thursday) and concludes at the Ocho Rios Baptist Church (Saturday).

WHAT’S OUR FOCUS?

Though a theme has not yet been decided specifically for Conference and Rally 2008, we wish to highlight the Youth Department’s theme for the period 2007 – 2009, “Spirit-filled with a purpose to fulfil”. This theme is in keeping with the Union’s emphasis on spirituality and, as it guides and influences all our programmes and emphases for the period, it should be expected that the theme for Conference and Rally 2008 will also be guided by our over-arching Youth Department theme.

WHAT WILL WE DO?

The programme for the weekend will incorporate a variety of activities and sessions and will, as is customary, comprise the business and training aspect - the Delegates’ Conference, and corporate celebrations and worship - the Rally.
